Colours, flags, music,\u00a0enthusiasm\u00a0and the desire to be together: once again this year, the EUNICE\u00a0Palio\u00a0brought a strong international dimension to the University of Catania\u2019s\u00a0Palio\u00a0d\u2019Ateneo, transforming the event into\u00a0a great opportunity\u00a0for encounter among cultures,\u00a0students\u00a0and European universities. Winning the 2026\u00a0Palio\u00a0was the delegation from the Polytechnic Institute of\u00a0Viseu\u00a0(Portugal), at the end of three days marked by energy, enthusiasm and sharing.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Included in the\u00a0programme\u00a0of the 21st edition of the\u00a0Palio\u00a0d\u2019Ateneo, the EUNICE\u00a0Palio\u00a0involved 10 students from the alliance\u2019s partner universities, who took part in sports and recreational activities together with students from the University of Catania in a festive atmosphere. Alongside the UNICT team, the participating delegations included PUT (Poland), UC (Spain), MONS (Belgium), VASA (Finland)\u00a0and VISEU (Portugal).<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Overall, the 2026 edition of the\u00a0Palio\u00a0d\u2019Ateneo\u00a0involved more than 3,000 students competing in over 40 sports and recreational disciplines, confirming it as one of the largest and most attended university events in Sicily. Within the framework of the international EUNICE\u00a0programme, European students took part in the various sporting activities scheduled throughout the event, experiencing every day of the\u00a0Palio\u00a0as active participants.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

More than just a sports competition, the\u00a0Palio\u00a0once again proved to be an experience of social interaction and community building, capable of bringing together young people from different countries,\u00a0languages\u00a0and cultures through the universal language of sport. One of the most evocative moments was the traditional parade through the historic\u00a0centre\u00a0of Catania, with hundreds of students marching through the city streets among chants,\u00a0flags\u00a0and university\u00a0colours, turning Piazza\u00a0Universit\u00e0\u00a0into a large European space for meeting and participation.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Students then competed in canoeing, running, volleyball, football, basketball, table tennis, beach volleyball and tug of war, alongside recreational activities\u00a0organised\u00a0between the university sports facilities and the Catania coastline. Between sea and mountains, the\u00a0Palio\u00a0also\u00a0provided\u00a0an opportunity to visit some of the symbolic places of the University of Catania and to experience first-hand the cultural and natural heritage of the city of Catania.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Making the sense of belonging to the EUNICE community even more meaningful was the official logo of the European competition featured on the\u00a0Palio\u00a0T-shirts, designed by the students themselves as part of a creative contest coordinated by the ESAB \u2014 EUNICE Student Advisory Board. A project born directly from student participation that has become a symbol of the alliance\u2019s shared European identity.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

The EUNICE\u00a0Palio\u00a0therefore confirms itself as an occasion where sport, inclusion and participation help build a dynamic and shared European university community, in which\u00a0internationalisation\u00a0moves beyond university classrooms and becomes a lived experience, active participation and everyday sharing.<\/p>\r\n\r\n
