There are ten categories of the \u2018Leonardo Torres Quevedo National Research Award\u2019, granted by the Spanish Ministry of Science, and Losada was recognised in the Engineering category <\/em>for his international leadership in Ocean Engineering, as well as for his pioneering contributions to the development of basic tools for a more sustainable use of ocean and coastal resources<\/em><\/h3>\n[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]\u00cd\u00f1igo J. Losada Rodr\u00edguez, Professor of Hydraulic Engineering at the University of Cantabria (Spain) and Director for Research at the Institute of Environmental Hydraulics of the University of Cantabria, received the Leonardo Torres Quevedo National Research Award, granted by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation in recognition of his international leadership in Ocean Engineering and his pioneering contributions to the development of tools that are laying the foundations for the sustainable use of ocean resources and coastal areas.<\/p>\n

The ceremony was presided over by the King and Queen of Spain, accompanied by the Spanish Minister of Science and Innovation, Diana Morant, and other regional and local representatives.<\/p>\n

Losada was the third researcher from the University of Cantabria to receive a National Research Award, after current Rector \u00c1ngel Pazos (Neuroscience, 1987) and Prof. Enrique Castillo (Engineering, 2010).[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]About Prof. Losada<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00cd\u00f1igo Losada holds a PhD in Civil Engineering from the University of Cantabria and the University of Delaware (USA). He promoted the creation of the Institute of Environmental Hydraulics<\/a><\/span>, founded 15 years ago of which he is Director for Research. In addition, this institute houses the Great Tank of Maritime Engineering of Cantabria<\/u><\/a><\/span>, also directed by Losada.<\/p>\n

His work has addressed various areas, mainly related to coastal dynamics and coastal protection, the effects of climate change in these areas and the development of ocean energy. He is a member of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.<\/p>\n

With an extensive career in research, management and scientific advice, he is one of the authors of the UN Oceans Report and the third European to win the prestigious M. Selim Yalin Lifetime Achievement Award<\/em> for his contributions over time. He also received the Augusto Gonz\u00e1lez Linares International Award<\/em>, the Professional Merit Medal<\/em> of the Spanish Association of Civil Engineers, the G. Moffatt and Frank E.
