In this interview, Kareem Mohamed, a visiting student from Poznan University of Technology (Poland – PUT) who did a research stay at the University of Cantabria (Spain – UC), and Prof. Rafael Granero, his academic supervisor in Spain, share their perspectives on this international experience. When I came here, I met Professor Rafael Granero, who is the Principal Investigator of the project “Applied Mathematical Analysis and Differential Equations” at the University of Cantabria and also my supervisor in this internship. During my stay at the University of Cantabria, we are working on mathematical control theory. I’m studying and learning how to control dynamic systems. Improving these systems can lead to safer and more reliable systems that we can use in the future, such as robots, machines, or even medical drives. This stay has been a great opportunity for me. I learnt advanced topics in control theory, and I also met people from different countries. Everything went smoothly, and every day I’m learning something new. With Kareem, right now we are studying what is called a “control problem”. The idea is that there is a partial differential equation and, instead of studying what the solution does by itself through the dynamics of the partial differential equation, we want to force the solution to behave in the way we want. I work mainly on the mathematical study of what is called a partial differential equation. We are always happy to have undergraduate students working with us. We are open to the participation of undergraduate students in the research life of the university. These sorts of internships are very useful for them and also for us.
