Working entirely online and in English, they collaborated across continents to turn real-world challenges into ideas with the potential to make a difference.

“We are truly delighted with the participation of the EUNICE Consortium, its students, professors, and researchers, in our very first international hackathon. It was deeply satisfying to see our students learn to work side by side, addressing the challenges surrounding the production and dissemination of research led by women. Innovation and creation are born from exchange: the richer and more diverse our shared experiences, the broader our ability to drive meaningful societal transformations. This intercultural and transdisciplinary collaboration gives us great pride and strengthens the ongoing dialogue and joint effort needed to advance our cooperation.” – Prof. Dr. Simone Dantas-Longhi – Special Advisor to the Dean’s Office for Research and Graduate Studies

The hackathon demonstrated how international cooperation can create space for fresh perspectives, interdisciplinary thinking and practical solutions to shared challenges.

From challenge to solution in three days

As described in the call article, over three intensive days, participants followed a structured innovation process, moving from problem identification and validation to business modelling, prototype development and pitching their ideas to an international jury.

Working through live sessions on Google Meet and collaborating on Discord, the teams progressed through six stages: Challenge, Validation, Business Model Canvas, Minimum Viable Product, Pitch and Demo Day.

Throughout the process, mentors from partner universities and the innovation ecosystem supported the teams in refining their problem statements, developing their solutions and exploring their business models. During these days, the mentors have been helping the students in each step of the process, making themselves available anytime a student had a doubt or question:

Daniela Costa, UPV

Susana Ambrosio, UPV

Viktor Zakar, BTU

Marten Klein, BTU

An international jury evaluates the solutions

The teams presented their work to an international jury composed of Prof. Luísa Augusto from UPV, Dr. Francesc Rodríguez from BTU, Dr. Fernanda Schultais from WGV Agro, and Dr. Clarissa Loureiro from CTI Renato Archer.

The jury assessed the projects against several criteria, including the relevance of the challenge, the quality of problem validation, innovation, value proposition, potential impact for women in STEM, feasibility, the development of the MVP and the clarity of the final pitch.

These criteria encouraged participants to look beyond the initial idea and consider how their solutions could respond to real needs and develop into viable initiatives.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text text_direction=”default”]

Meet the winning team: Lab2Market STEM

The winning team, Lab2Market STEM, took on the challenge of addressing a persistent gap between scientific research and its commercial application by helping women researchers understand how to bring their discoveries closer to the market.

The team brought together complementary expertise:

Thalya Lopes – Founder and Research Lead, a PhD student in Plant Pathology at UFV, drew inspiration from her own experience in research and start-ups, where she encountered the challenges of bridging laboratory discoveries and market opportunities.

Oussama Abbassi – Product and Tech Lead, a software engineer at Université Polytechnique Hauts-de-France (UPHF) and a student in IT for Smart and Sustainable mobility, developed the team’s live MVP and Business Model Canvas.

As part of their award, Thalya and Oussama will travel to the EUNICE Synergy Congress in Valenciennes, France.[/vc_column_text][image_with_animation image_url=”66739″ image_size=”full” max_width=”100%” max_width_mobile=”default” animation_type=”entrance” animation=”None” animation_movement_type=”transform_y” hover_animation=”none” alignment=”” img_link_large=”yes” border_radius=”none” box_shadow=”none” image_loading=”default”][vc_column_text text_direction=”default”]

Bridging the gap between the lab and the market

Women remain underrepresented in the commercialization of scientific research. Although they account for around one-third of researchers worldwide, they represent a much smaller share of inventors named on international patent applications. For researchers hoping to turn scientific discoveries into practical applications, the path from the laboratory to the market can be difficult to navigate.

Lab2Market STEM aims to make that journey more accessible. The team proposes a free platform designed to help women researchers, across scientific disciplines and countries, identify the next steps towards commercialising their research.

The platform is built around three key functions:

Diagnose: Researchers answer questions in plain language to assess how close their research is to market readiness, using the European Union’s Technology Readiness Level (TRL) framework alongside considerations such as intellectual property, potential customers, team capacity and funding.

Match: Based on the research’s stage of development and the researcher’s country, the platform identifies relevant programs and support opportunities, from patent assistance to European funding schemes.

Connect: An expert review helps researchers identify and connect with suitable partners who can support the next stage of development.

The aim is to replace uncertainty with a clearer path forward. Researchers can identify practical next steps, universities can better support promising projects and the development of women-led spin-offs, and companies can discover research relevant to their needs.

The team is using a human-supported version of the platform to learn what researchers need before automating it. They have invited universities to run a pilot and plan to test their proposed business model through conversations with potential customers.

By addressing the practical barriers between research and innovation, Lab2Market STEM offers a promising example of how targeted solutions can help women researchers bring their ideas beyond the laboratory.

Celebrating collaboration and innovation

The first EUNICE–UFV International Hackathon brought students from different academic and national backgrounds together around a shared challenge.

“The UFV–EUNICE International Hackathon 2026 highlighted the power of challenge-based learning to transform ideas into solutions for society. By bringing together students from different countries and disciplines, it fostered creativity, collaboration and innovation around the important theme of Women in STEM. The initiative reflects the EUNICE commitment to connecting education, research and innovation through international cooperation and student engagement,” said Prof. Cristina Satriano from the University of Catania.

In just three days, the teams explored complex issues, tested ideas and developed solutions through international and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Magdalena Sikorska, Secretary General of EUNICE AISBL, travelled to UFV to take part in SIA UFV 2026, where she joined discussions and panels with the university community. She also attended the SIA Closing Ceremony, during which the hackathon winners were announced, and welcomed Thalya on stage alongside the UFV representatives who presented her with the winner’s certificate and congratulated her.

Our congratulations go to Lab2Market STEM for its winning proposal, and our thanks to all 39 participants for their creativity, commitment and teamwork throughout the event.

We would also like to thank the Federal University of Viçosa and tecnoPARQ for our collaboration in this first edition, as well as the jury members, mentors, speakers, the EUNICE AISBL General Secretariat and all EUNICE partner universities whose contributions helped make the initiative possible.

The hackathon marks a valuable step in strengthening cooperation between EUNICE and UFV, creating opportunities for students to learn from one another and work together on challenges that extend beyond borders.[/vc_column_text][image_with_animation image_url=”66740″
