When many lecturers first move from face-to-face teaching to online teaching, the natural instinct is to replicate what they already do in the classroom. We record lectures, upload slides, schedule virtual sessions, and hope that learning will somehow happen in the same way.
Unfortunately, it rarely does.
One of the biggest misconceptions about online education is believing that it is simply traditional teaching delivered through a screen. In a physical classroom, teachers can immediately detect confusion, disengagement or curiosity. Students can ask spontaneous questions. Body language provides constant feedback. Online, much of that disappears. Students often learn alone, at different times, and with far more distractions competing for their attention.
Over the years, and through our work supporting faculty in digital teaching initiatives, we have learned that effective online learning requires a different mindset. It is not about transferring content. It is about designing learning experiences.
Here are ten practical principles that can make that transition easier.
1. Design for students who learn independently
In an online course, students often spend hours working alone. That means instructions must be far clearer than they would be in a classroom. Instead of writing, “Complete Activity 2,” explain how long it should take, what students need to submit, where they should upload it, and how it will be assessed.
Think of every question a student might ask and answer it in advance.
For example, a short welcome message or an automated reminder halfway through the course can make a huge difference in helping students stay on track.
2. Less content, more learning
One of the most common mistakes in online teaching is trying to fit exactly the same amount of content into the course as in a face-to-face setting. Students tire more quickly online and their attention is more fragile.
Rather than covering everything, focus on what matters most.
A well-explained concept supported by meaningful examples often has much more impact than twenty additional slides. Good visual design also matters. Clear layouts, readable text and carefully chosen images help learners focus on understanding rather than decoding information.

3. Make the course structure predictable
Students should spend their energy learning, not figuring out what they are supposed to do next.
A predictable structure creates a sense of security and reduces cognitive load. If every module follows the same sequence, such as introduction, video, activity, discussion and assessment, students quickly become familiar with the course environment.
You can still be creative with the content. The structure simply provides a reliable framework.
4. Short videos work better
We’ve all seen hour-long lecture recordings uploaded to learning platforms. The problem is that students rarely watch them with the same attention they would have in a classroom.
Short videos are usually much more effective. Five videos of six minutes each are often better than a single thirty-minute recording. Each video should answer one question or explain one key concept.
Imagine teaching statistics. Instead of recording one long session on hypothesis testing, create separate videos on research questions, significance levels, p-values and interpretation of results. Students can revisit exactly what they need.
And remember: good audio quality matters as much as good video quality. Adding subtitles also improves accessibility.
5. Speak as if you were talking to one student
Many online courses feel impersonal. Yet students learn better when they feel a human connection with their instructor.
Look directly at the camera. Use a conversational tone. Show enthusiasm. Ask questions. Create the feeling that you are speaking to an individual learner rather than delivering a formal presentation to a crowd.
Small details matter. A friendly “Let’s work through this together” can be much more engaging than a distant academic monologue.
6. Communicate more than feels necessary
In a classroom, students receive constant signals about what is happening. Online, silence can generate uncertainty.
Weekly updates, reminders, announcements and short messages help students feel connected and supported. If you are unsure whether to communicate something, the answer is usually yes.
A simple message saying, “You’re now halfway through the course. Keep going, you’re doing great,” can be surprisingly motivating.
7. Keep students active
Learning does not happen because students watch videos or read documents.
Learning happens when students think, discuss, apply, analyse and create.
For this reason, online courses should include regular activities. Short quizzes, reflection exercises, polls, debates and practical tasks can help reactivate attention and promote deeper learning.
An effective guideline is to ask students to do something every few minutes rather than remaining passive for long periods.
8. Design authentic assessments
The rise of artificial intelligence has made this principle more important than ever.
If an assessment can be completed through a simple copy-and-paste request to an AI tool, then it probably measures the wrong thing. Authentic assessments focus on applying knowledge, comparing alternatives, solving real-world problems and justifying decisions.
For example, instead of asking students to define leadership styles, ask them to analyse a leadership challenge in their workplace and propose a solution. Real learning emerges when tasks require judgment and context.
9. Feedback matters more than grades
Students often remember good feedback long after they have forgotten their mark.
Effective feedback can be remarkably simple:
- What was done well.
- What could be improved.
- What the next step should be.
Customisation makes feedback even more powerful. Referring to a student’s name and commenting on specific aspects of their work shows that their effort has been seen and valued.
10. Use technology with purpose
Online teaching offers an endless range of tools. Kahoot, Padlet, Miro, Mentimeter, Canva and many others can enrich learning experiences.
However, more technology does not necessarily mean better learning.
Students can easily become overwhelmed when every activity requires a different platform or application. The best online courses are often the simplest ones. Every tool should have a clear purpose and solve a specific problem. If it does not add value, it probably should not be there.
The Golden Rule
If there is one idea that connects all ten principles, it is this:
A well-designed online course should make it easy for students to know what to do, when to do it, and how they will be assessed. Students should be contacting their lecturer to discuss ideas, ask thoughtful questions and contribute to learning, not because they are confused about basic course logistics.
Moving from face-to-face teaching to online teaching is undoubtedly challenging. It requires new habits, new strategies and, sometimes, a different way of thinking about teaching itself.
But when courses are designed around clarity, communication, engagement and meaningful learning, online education can become much more than a substitute for classroom teaching. It can become a powerful learning experience in its own right.
