Crossing Borders: Colonial Echoes in Language, Space and Culture – Summer School

Organised by UMONS (Belgium), Crossing Borders: Colonial Echoes in Language, Space and Culture is an Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programme. It is a presential course with a mandatory online part that will be delivered in Mons (Belgium), and taught in English.

Objectives

This summer school invites you to explore the profound impact of historical legacy on contemporary societies, delving into how linguistic, spatial, cultural and gender identities continue to carry the imprints of colonial pasts. Through visits, engaging lectures, interactive workshops, and thought-provoking discussions with experts from diverse fields and teachers of the EUNICE network, you’ll uncover the ways in which borders—physical, linguistic, and cultural— are shaped by migration and the legacies of colonisation. If you are interested in interculturality and decolonial perspectives, this programme offers you the space to discuss assumptions, connect with peers from diverse disciplines and backgrounds, and reimagine the world through a critically informed lens.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this intensive programme, participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate grounded theoretical knowledge in interculturality.
  • Improve analytical skills to critically engage with aspects related to coloniality, interculturality and power relations through language, discourse and space.
  • Develop self-awareness and a sense of cultural humility, recognise one’s own cultural background influences, and understand one’s own cultural identity, assumptions and biases.
  • Reflect on a wide variety of narratives and adopt an integrative approach to culture, space and language.
  • Understand the importance of space, culture and language for healthy European democratic societies and sustainable communities.
