MULTICULTURAL FRANCE: NATIONAL AND REGIONAL ASPECTS

The course “Multicultural France: National and Regional aspects” aims at giving an insight into diverse linguistic and cultural dimensions of contemporary France.

Students will learn to:

  • understand and appreciate perspectives and world views of others (values);
  • examine local, global and intercultural issues (values);
  • value cultural diversity and pluralism of views and practices;
  • articulate awareness of one’s own cultural identity (attitudes);
  • work effectively in diverse teams (skills);
  • respond to case studies or simulations (skills);
  • empathise with people who have a different cultural background
  • compare the intercultural and the transcultural perspectives in the field of theatre (knowledge);
  • tolerate ambiguity and uncertainty;
  • understand of cultural, societal and individual interactions;
  • implement translation strategies (skills/values).

The content of the course consists of six units:

  3. Music and politics: Paris, Operetta and the Second Empire, The folk music of northern France. UPHF, Stephanie Baumann, (3h), Language of tuition: French
  4. Between tradition and modernity. UPHF, Mercedes Banegas (3h), Language of tuition: French
  5. Translating French Songs: The Challenge of Linguistic Hybridity. UPHF, Paul Grundy (3h), Language of tuition: English
  6. French Songs and Transatlantic Influences. UPHF, Jean-Charles Meunier (3h), Language of tuition: English

Language practice, discussion, feedback, case studies, online exercises

10th November: Fifth session from 15.30 to 18.30 (CET): 3h

17th November: Sixth Session from 15.30 to 18.30 (CET): 3h

  • EUNICE student: enrolled as a student (Masters) in one of the universities of EUNICE European University alliance.
  • B2 level of English and French
  • Interest in linguistics, translation and cultural studies
