The University of Mons (UMONS), is a French-speaking university in the province of Hainaut, Belgium. Ideally located in the heart of Europe, it is approximately 50 kilometres from Brussels, the capital of Europe. Named Cultural Capital of Wallonia in 2002, the City of Mons was then elected European Capital of Culture in 2015.
UMONS was created in 2009 following a merger between the University of Mons-Hainaut and the Faculty of Engineering of Mons, the university’s oldest faculty, founded in 1837.
Our University has 7 faculties, 3 schools, 10 research institutes. It operates on two campuses, the main one, located in Mons, and a second one in Charleroi. The University has facilities spread throughout the historical heart of the city of Mons, forming an urban campus.
The University of Mons offers a wide variety of courses in an enriching environment, as well as close teacher-student relationships. Indeed, with one thousand instructors, researchers, and scientists, for a population of over 11,000 students, UMONS has a staff-to student ratio that allows students to build great working relationships with instructors. Despite the small size of UMONS, it is nonetheless open to internationalisation. Its research excellence contributes to the socio-economic development of the entire region.
Why did you choose to study at UMONS?
“I am currently doing my Master at UMONS. I chose this University because I wanted to take a university course where the reputation was good, both for the courses and for the atmosphere. And I made the right decision!
The courses match my expectations: they are interesting, and I know that they will my useful for my future. As for the atmosphere, it’s very nice. Even if UMONS is a big institution, I still feel at home. I know that whatever happens, I will always have support not only from my family, but also from my friends, my teachers, and other members of staff.“
Constantin ASVESTARIS,
Master Student at the Faculty of Translation and Interpretation
