Mohamed was a participant in a summer school organised by BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg. He has taken time to share his experiences and insights and answer some relevant questions that may resonate with other students and enthusiasts. Join him on his journey, his goals and the experiences that the summer school offered by BTU together with EUNICE has given him.
His name is Mohamed from the Institute of Mathematics at BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg and he is currently doing his PhD in the field of stochastic optimal control of pension funds.

When I came across the opportunity to engage in summer school on ”Optimal control”, the decision to participate was an easy one (it’s partially the title of my P.h.D topic). The chance to collaborate with like-minded individuals working in similar directions, each bringing their unique perspectives to the table, intrigued me.

The summer school has been a captivating blend of theoretical knowledge and practical application, from deterministic and stochastic optimal control to “Applications of stochastic processes in physics”, “Stochastic optimal control for the simulation of rare events” and “application to dynamic portfolio optimization”. It provided me with an enriching opportunity to review very basic ideas in stochastic calculus and be exposed to optimal control of PDEs (in the theoretical sense) which I very much like as it has many application to optimizing systems that are described by partial differential equations. I especially like the broad courses and talks that have been presented. Engaging with talented individuals from diverse research areas has enriched my understanding of new aspects of research questions in the area of optimal control. The program made it possible to meet people who are working in optimization field.

The summer school was not only about mathematics but offered as well excursion to the Spreewald which constituted exercise to make a visit with shorter way, minimal energy and maximal fun. With other interesting questions:
2. Is the model deterministic or stochastic?
2. Please write the model.
3. Please find the optimal way and the optimal control.

What I particularly appreciate about this endeavor is the collaborative nature of the experience. The summer school has fosters an environment that encourages active participation, open discussions, and knowledge sharing. Through this exchange, I have made connections with my peers and had the chance to talk about the field of study.
Wholeheartedly, I would recommend EUNICE to any student seeking a transformative experience. The program offers unparalleled opportunities to broaden one’s horizons, gain exposure to new perspectives, and forge lifelong connections.

While EUNICE is undoubtedly a remarkable initiative, there is always room for improvement. As the community continues to grow, ensuring inclusivity and equal participation for all members should remain a top priority. Additionally, exploring avenues for expanding the program’s reach and impact would enable more students to benefit from this enriching experience.

The summer school has been a transformative experience that has added to my academic journey remarkable points. The program’s emphasis on collaboration, diversity, and skill development has prepared me for the challenges that lie ahead. I am immensely grateful for the opportunities EUNICE has provided and the lasting impact it will have on my life.
