Introduction to English linguistics (semantics, morphology, syntax, phonetics and phonology); essential grammar of English; Translation: Theory and Practice.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Students will
• Attain linguistic competence at CEFR B2 level, enabling fluent and spontaneous expression in social and professional contexts.
• Critically comprehend and analyze narrative-descriptive texts through reading, translation, and adaptation to standard lexical and textual models.
• Apply methodological knowledge autonomously in specialized and general written/oral interactions.

UNITS
1. PHONETICS AND PHONOLOGY – segmental and suprasegmental phonology
2. MORPHOLOGY AND WORD FORMATION – derivational and inflectional morphology, word classes, word formation.
3. SEMANTICS – lexis, meanings, connotations in English and in translation
4. TRANSLATION STUDIES AND MULTICULTURALISM – theories and strategies for translation. Translation and crosscultural competence

PLANNED LEARNING ACTIVITIES AND TEACHING METHODS
Lectures, seminars, tutorials, individual and group work, translation portfolio

Timetable:

  • Two classes per week. Each class lasts 2 hours

Ideally students possess a B1 level competence in English. At the end of the course, students will reach B2 level.
