The Spanish university acknowledges the entrepreneurial effort of PhD student and researcher Saúl Cano

The EUNICE partner University of Cantabria (Spain) awarded the first prize for the Best University Entrepreneurship Project in the development phase of the 19th edition of the UCem University Entrepreneurship Awards to the “AI-signtext” project, presented by UC PhD student and researcher Saúl Cano.

“AI-signtext” is an innovative idea that aims to facilitate the translation of Spanish sign language into written language by applying artificial intelligence techniques, specifically neural networks. “The idea is to detect sign language from images in real time, for example from a video call or meeting, and convert it into text,” explains Saúl Cano, since it is a solution to a communication situation in which there is no interpreter involved. To do this, Cano has trained the AI with a large number of images for a small number of words.

This is an incipient project whose development will consist of compiling videos of Spanish-sign-language interpreters with which to continue training the neural network until it learns to translate any conversation in real time. This is an application that is already being developed at an international level, although it is not yet available in Spanish. The aim would be to integrate it into existing videoconferencing and virtual meeting systems on the market.
