Intercultural Studies: Urbanity and Migration 26-27 S2

The course provides a general understanding of intercultural theory and practice in the area of urbanity, migration, and cultural diversity. Today, the concept of “the intercultural city” is both an analytical contribution to current research and an ideological and practical intervention into the planning, administration, and development of cities. The course focuses especially on guidelines for intercultural urban development at the European level, and measures this type of policy against the results of ethnographic and sociological investigations. Students analyse urbanity, migration, and interculturality and present their analysis in a seminar.

Upon completion of the course, students should be able to:
1. give an account of intercultural theories used in urban studies of migration, diversity, and
urban development,
2. give an account of intercultural urban policy and political practice from a global and
comparative perspective, and
3. use intercultural models of interpretation in a case study focused on urbanity, migration,
and interculturality.
