EUNICE alliance partly inspired this Italian university in the drafting of the plan: “There are many interesting ideas coming from EUNICE and from its work on Gender Equality,” said Professor of European Union Law Adriana Di Stefano

University of Catania (Italy) presented its Gender Equality Plan (2022-206), aimed at ensuring promotion and effective implementation of values of equality, non-discrimination and diversity. To this end, the plan summarises actions and objectives to overcome gender barries and gaps at every level.

Measure plannes –from work-life balance, to analysis of decision-making and leadership processes, to gender equality in research and education– aim to “continue on the right path, thanks to a new culture that has been permeating within the university administration,” in words of this Italian university’s General Director Giovanni La Via.

University of Catania’s data on gender gap are constantly improving and producing results: “The achievements testify to a shift in thinking in our university,” said Rector Francesco Priolo, “comparing data over time shows how much our university has changed. This was possible thanks to collaboration of professors and staff to the path of governance undertaken.” He added: “Proportions of women in leadership roles are higher than national benchmarks. We are on the right road, but there is still a long way to improve.”

Professor of European Union Law Adriana Di Stefano, who is also co-founder and member of the Scientific Committee of the Interdisciplinary Centre for Gender Studies (GENUS) of the University of Catania, mentioned the work carried out by EUNICE staff as a promoter of good practices: “There are many interesting ideas coming from EUNICE and from their work on Gender Equality and the communication activities undertaken.”
