Colours, flags, music, enthusiasm and the desire to be together: once again this year, the EUNICE Palio brought a strong international dimension to the University of Catania’s Palio d’Ateneo, transforming the event into a great opportunity for encounter among cultures, students and European universities. Winning the 2026 Palio was the delegation from the Polytechnic Institute of Viseu (Portugal), at the end of three days marked by energy, enthusiasm and sharing.

Included in the programme of the 21st edition of the Palio d’Ateneo, the EUNICE Palio involved 10 students from the alliance’s partner universities, who took part in sports and recreational activities together with students from the University of Catania in a festive atmosphere. Alongside the UNICT team, the participating delegations included PUT (Poland), UC (Spain), MONS (Belgium), VASA (Finland) and VISEU (Portugal).
Overall, the 2026 edition of the Palio d’Ateneo involved more than 3,000 students competing in over 40 sports and recreational disciplines, confirming it as one of the largest and most attended university events in Sicily. Within the framework of the international EUNICE programme, European students took part in the various sporting activities scheduled throughout the event, experiencing every day of the Palio as active participants.
More than just a sports competition, the Palio once again proved to be an experience of social interaction and community building, capable of bringing together young people from different countries, languages and cultures through the universal language of sport. One of the most evocative moments was the traditional parade through the historic centre of Catania, with hundreds of students marching through the city streets among chants, flags and university colours, turning Piazza Università into a large European space for meeting and participation.
Students then competed in canoeing, running, volleyball, football, basketball, table tennis, beach volleyball and tug of war, alongside recreational activities organised between the university sports facilities and the Catania coastline. Between sea and mountains, the Palio also provided an opportunity to visit some of the symbolic places of the University of Catania and to experience first-hand the cultural and natural heritage of the city of Catania.
Making the sense of belonging to the EUNICE community even more meaningful was the official logo of the European competition featured on the Palio T-shirts, designed by the students themselves as part of a creative contest coordinated by the ESAB — EUNICE Student Advisory Board. A project born directly from student participation that has become a symbol of the alliance’s shared European identity.
The EUNICE Palio therefore confirms itself as an occasion where sport, inclusion and participation help build a dynamic and shared European university community, in which internationalisation moves beyond university classrooms and becomes a lived experience, active participation and everyday sharing.
