The Polytechnic University of Viseu begins a new chapter in its history, strengthening its commitment to academic excellence, knowledge creation, innovation and its contribution to society. This new stage reflects the growth and consolidation of an institution that has progressively expanded its academic, scientific and international presence.
As part of this institutional evolution, the Instituto Politécnico de Viseu officially became the Polytechnic University of Viseu (UPV) on 1 August, marking an important milestone in its journey and opening new opportunities for the institution and its community.
The transition to Polytechnic University is the result of a process spanning several years, shaped by the commitment, dedication and collective effort of the entire academic community and the institution’s many partners. The new designation reflects the institution’s growth and reinforces its ambition to continue establishing itself as a leading university, closely connected to its region, open to the world and committed to contributing to the development of society.
For the Rector of the Polytechnic University of Viseu, José dos Santos Costa “this achievement belongs to everyone, it is the result of the vision of those who dreamed, the determination of those who led, the competence of those who worked, and the confidence of those who never stopped believing that it was possible to go further”.
This renewed international ambition is also reflected in the Polytechnic University of Viseu’s active participation in the EUNICE European University Alliance, through which the institution continues to strengthen its European partnerships, expand opportunities for academic and research cooperation, and contribute to the development of a more connected European Higher Education Area. The Alliance represents an important part of UPV’s international journey and its commitment to building lasting partnerships across Europe.
The new institutional status also reinforces UPV’s ambition to deepen its international dimension, strengthen academic and scientific cooperation, and further connect knowledge, innovation and development.
“We believe in a Polytechnic University of Viseu that is open to the world, integrated into major international knowledge networks, capable of attracting talent, promoting interdisciplinarity, fostering entrepreneurship, and positioning itself as a strategic partner in regional, national, European and Lusophone development,” said the Rector.
In this new chapter, the Polytechnic University of Viseu aims to consolidate an identity built on excellence, innovation, relevance and proximity, while srengthening the links between academia and the different sectors of society.
The transition is therefore understood as a collective commitment, bringing together the entire academic community and the partners who have contributed to and supported the institution’s journey.
The Rector believes that “UPV is a commitment that brings together students, professors, researchers, technical staff, employees, companies, municipalities and institutional partners around a common purpose: to build a university recognised for its excellence, relevance, innovation and the impact it generates in society”.
The Polytechnic University of Viseu begins this new chapter maintaining its strong connection to its region and community, while embracing renewed ambitions to continue growing, innovating and creating knowledge and value with a meaningful impact on society.
